There’s definitely an Autumnal feeling in the air; the mornings are a bit nippier and the nights are drawing in….but there’s lots to look forward to in the Walkley Events Calendar. Firstly, a quick look back at September…
A massive WELL DONE to the new team who organised this year’s Walkley Horticultural Show and a heartfelt thank you, to the ‘old guard’ who’ve run this lovely event for a number of years (pictured above). It was a resounding success!
This year’s Walkley Horticultural Show was a great success, largely due to the support we received from our community. We had 211 visitors on the Saturday and record numbers of entrants (75) and entries (303).
Although it’s a free event, we raised enough this year (principally from the raffle and the entry fees for produce) to be able to give £400 to S6 Foodbank. As they can’t take fresh or homemade produce, surplus fruit and veg was donated to ‘Foodworks’ who turned it into meals to sell at the Zest cafe.
We had some wonderful volunteers, who helped set-up, greeted visitors and made sure everyone felt welcome. We’re especially grateful to the judges and our photographer, who gave up their time again this year to support this local event. Also, our thanks go to the volunteers from Walkley Library who provided the children’s activities.
We also want to thank local businesses – Walkley Cottage, Walkley Library, The Raven, Walkley Beer Co, Steve’s Barbers, The Rose House, Wood’s Fitness, Rowsha, Suitcase Circus and Chapter One Coffee, who generously donated prizes for the raffle.
It was good to see the Richardson’s Cup and the Julie Clarke Cup go to such appreciative recipients and we’d like to thank the Walkley Women’s Institute for providing the Junior Prize.
We’re grateful to everyone at St. Mary’s for allowing us to use the church and hall, and we do hope sales of their excellent refreshments boosted church funds. Although the market in the church was smaller this year, with four traders and four community stalls, it was popular and complemented the show well.
We hope you enjoyed being a part of this event as much as we enjoyed putting it together, and our thanks again to everyone who made it possible, even if not specifically mentioned above.

Despite the inclement weather, the crowds came and we were treated to a wonderful afternoon of music. A massive thank you to everyone who braved the rain and were such a wonderful, appreciative audience. And of course, it wouldn’t be possible without our super talented musicians. Big love to:

It was indeed a chance to ‘dress up and let your hair down’ at the latest Community Cinema – The Rocky Horror Picture Show – our audience really didn’t disappoint! A big thanks to everyone who made such an effort!
Thanks to Ann donating her Rocky Horror Memorabilia…The ’Riff Raff Raffle’ raised a rockin’ £185!! All of the Prizes were won on the night…
Check out ‘Save The Date’ for our next Community Cinema – A fabulous
Family Friendly Festive Feature…
In what’s been a record dry year, there seems to be a pattern emerging for our Walkley events (especially the outdoor ones!)….RAIN….and lots of it! The Heritage Open Days Saturday, was no exception but thankfully the day wasn’t a complete washout.
Some thanks to the organisers and visitors from Chris Reece:
Thank you all for persevering despite the weather. Thankfully most of the banners and bunting had been put up in advance and a great idea from Vicky to use a gazebo for the queue for the bell tower.
Thanks also to the bell-ringers for managing to supply a couple of them to ring the bells in the morning despite having a competition commitment in the afternoon.
We had actually doubled the number of organisations/venues from last year, so welcome back to Sheffield Buddhist Centre and Walkley Ebenezer and Hello to Sheffield Yoga School and Sheffield (ssnu) Spiritualist Church. It was also excellent to have the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group back again.
The rain severely affected the number of visitors in particular children. From the stalwart people-counting on clickers, pen & paper and visitor books, we may have had around 120-150 visitors, with most people visiting two or thee buildings. I have seen all the figures apart from the Buddhist Centre who may have had more.
We know that several visitors came from outside Walkley and at least one couple crossed the Pennines from Stockport, though they rounded off their visit with a trip to Bramall Lane. They chose Walkley because they spotted in the brochure that several buildings were open.
Next year’s theme will be based around the everyday histories of working lives. From factory floors to kitchen counters, school desks to sailors’ docks, and all the corners of a grand estate: house and gardens! Look out for more details in the new year.
Walkley Ebenezer is very much still in use and they are undertaking a Community Needs Assessment Survey. Your input is vital in helping them understand the current state of facilities and what the local need is for community buildings, perceived gaps in services, and what new initiatives you would like to see.
